November 21, 2013 6:00-8:30 p.m.

Competitors must be a current member of the 2013-2014 YOL Symphony Orchestra.  Competitors may audition on their orchestral instrument. Judges will be selected from the community and should not have any affiliation with competitors.  The conductor of the Symphony Orchestra will serve as a consultant to the judges.

  • Any concerto winner will be featured only once during their YOL membership.
  • Compositions with two or more soloists (e.g., violin and cello, for example) are allowed, but if chosen as a winner that performance will count as each player’s one performance during their YOL membership.
  • Winners are chosen by a judging staff selected by the YOL board; the number of winners is not pre-determined. All decisions made by the judges (in consultation with the Symphony conductor) are final. This will be a live audition. Recorded auditions are not accepted.
  • Requirements:
  • The student and his/her applied teacher must select a concerto (or concerto movement) or solo piece that has a readily available orchestral accompaniment.  The competition piece must be approved by Dr. Bruce Wood, YOL Symphony Orchestra Conductor, before a student completes the audition form.  Dr. Wood will need a copy of the piece (solo part and piano accompaniment to determine its playability with the orchestra).
  • The length of the piece during auditions cannot exceed ten minutes. “Time” will be called if necessary.
  • You must have Dr. Wood’s approval before submitting the application.  It is recommended that you contact him as early as possible.

Student and Family Responsibilities:

  • The student is responsible for submitting the completed application and the $20 audition fee by the due date.
  • The student should contact and work with YOL general manager Angela Frisbie ( to determine the full purchase or rental costs of the orchestral accompaniment.  Due to budgetary restraints, YOL can pay a maximum of $250 for music rental.  The student will be responsible for any amount over the $250 rental fee paid by YOL.  We encourage you to research this issue with Ms. Frisbie.  Entrants must provide his/her own accompanist for the competition and are responsible for any accompanist fees; a piano will be available.  Students are, of course, responsible for providing or securing their own solo instrument.
  • The deadline for entering the competition is 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2013.  At that time, a completed application form, approved and signed by Dr. Bruce Wood, the $20 audition fee and three copies of the orchestral or piano score must be in the possession of the YOL general manager.

*IMPORTANT* Students submitting incomplete or late audition forms will not compete.*IMPORTANT*

  • Memorization of the competition piece is strongly recommended, but will be left to the discretion of the applied teacher, in consultation with the student.

  • The winner(s) will perform on the YOL 2013-14 spring concert. They will be notified by telephone the evening of the competition, and results will be posted the next day on the website.  Written evaluations by the judges will be mailed to contestants the week after the competition.
