 Mission of YOL

  • To provide an exceptional music education experience for the members of the orchestras
  • To provide artistic performances that enrich the lives of developing musicians, our community, and our region
  • To work cooperatively with public and private schools and independent music teachers in a continuing effort to provide musical development for youth

Membership and Auditions

  • YOL is open to any young musician through twelfth grade who plays an orchestral instrument. Participation in their school orchestra/band program is highly encouraged unless special situations make it impossible.
  • Admission to YOL is granted without regard to race, religion, or national/ethnic origin. Disabled applicants who qualify for admission are afforded the same rights and privileges and are included in the same activities as all YOL members.
  • All YOL members must audition annually.

Musical Mentors/Coaches

  • In order to provide the best musical experience possible and a level of professionalism unmatched in the West Texas area, YOL’s Artistic Staff is comprised of many of the region’s most respected music educators, professional musicians, and conductors. Our mentors/coaches are affiliated with area colleges and universities, public and private school systems, and/0r the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.

YOL Orchestras

All Orchestras perform two major concerts per year and participate in an annual fall retreat.

  • Prelude String Orchestra – Designed for beginning to intermediate string players, this orchestra serves musicians in their first few years of development by fine-tuning their performance technique in order to prepare them for participation in the YOL Philharmonic Orchestra. There is no lower age limit for this orchestra, however the student must be able to read music and be attentive during rehearsals.
  • Philharmonic Orchestra – Designed for upper-intermediate to advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players, this is a FULL orchestra, performing exciting and innovative orchestral repertoire, while receiving the necessary intensive training designed to prepare them for membership in the YOL Symphony Orchestra.
  • Symphony Orchestra – The YOL Symphony Orchestra is designed for advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players, performing music from the standard professional concert literature as well as newly composed works. In addition to the two major concerts per year, the Symphony Orchestra performs with YOL alumni and professional musicians in Lubbock’s annual Fourth on Broadway Fireworks Concert. Each fall, an annual concerto competition is held for its members. The winner is featured as soloist with the orchestra on the spring concert.

Membership Fees

  • $25 non-refundable audition fee ($25 audition fee may be paid in advance or at time of audition and will be applied toward your tuition once you are accepted to the orchestra.)
  • $295 yearly membership fee ($70 non-refundable tuition deposit is due May 15th. If needed, the tuition balance of $225 may be paid in three installments of $75, due June 15th, July 15th, and August 15th.) There are other payment options, but these will incur a higher overall cost.

Financial Aid Opportunities

  • It is our sincere desire that no student be denied participation in YOL due to financial need. A qualifying student who is accepted into the YOL program will have the opportunity to apply for need-based assistance. Financial aid can only be awarded after ALL completed documents are received for review. For further information, please email info@youthorchestrasoflubbock.org.

Rehearsals

  • Full Orchestra Rehearsals are held from 2:00 p.m. –4:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoons at Frenship High School (902 Dowden Road, Wolfforth, TX 79382). All orchestras rehearse on Sundays from mid- August through early October in preparation for the fall concert, and again from January through the first weekend in March in preparation for the spring concert.
NOTE: Percussionists will have additional rehearsal time, starting at 1 p.m. every Sunday.

Attendance and School Participation

  • Regular attendance at rehearsals and consistent practice of YOL music at home are crucial for our orchestras to perform at the highest level of musicianship.
  • YOL is totally committed to the support of public and private school music programs. All students are strongly encouraged to participate in their school band or orchestra where they exist.

Annual Fall Retreat

  • All YOL members are required to participate in the YOL Fall Retreat, traditionally held on the third weekend of August (all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon). This event, held at a location to be announced in June, combines a mixture of intense sectional training with experienced coaches, full orchestral rehearsals with the conductors and fun activities.
